What is an operating system?

Answer: An operating system (OS) is a special type of software . Normally an operating system consists of many computer programs that work together as one unit (or system). This software normally runs soon after starting a computer and allows other programs to more easily interact with the parts of the computer, including those which control what is displayed on the screen.

Examples include Unix, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac, OS X, BeOS, Chrome OS, and DOS.
