One Small Scrap

The American Cancer Society hosts the “Great American Smokeout” on the third Thursday each November to encourage smokers to quit. Today is the Great American Smokeout of 2015 and I was invited by a friend to join her blog series, “An Author’s Journey,” to tell a short version of my journey to quit smoking and become a published author. If you are addicted to “tobacco cigarettes,” or if you believe you can put them down whenever you feel like it, I hope you will take a few minutes of your (more…)

What if it’s Alzheimer’s? Quit Worrying.

Get a Memory Check During National Memory Screening Week By Marianne Sciucco, author of Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer’s love story, #AlzAuthors I’m writing today as one of the forgotten, one of those left behind in the fog of Alzheimer’s disease that took over someone I loved. The first time this happened was in the late 1980’s, when, as a 20-something, I didn’t know much about this disease and didn’t understand why Auntie Gilda had to live in a nursing home and didn’t recognize me when I came to call. She (more…)

The Humbling of the Shrew

The Humbling of the Shrew – a tale of sixty-four bits or less… by Michael Lynes So…I hate computers and computers hate me. I suppose it’s only fair. After all I have misspent the last three decades of my youth assembling, tinkering, compiling and probing their convoluted silicon innards, and what creation does not harbor hatred for its creator? My reciprocal loathing is similarly well founded as the rewards of a career in embedded software engineering are few and fleeting. For instance I’ve long ago given up any hope of (more…)

Keys to Life

I am extremely honored to make a guest appearance on the blog of James North with my recollection of a key moment of my life. This is the first time this story has been told publicly. Cool Kids

Have you ever had to be somewhere and felt you didn’t belong there, believed you were the odd one—the misfit? I suspect most people feel this way at least once. Perhaps it was in junior high as it was for me or maybe, for you, it was some other time or place. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting an inspiring young woman from Portugal. She’s extremely talented, kind, beautiful, and has a sensational voice. Her name is Cat Rox and I absolutely love her rendition of (more…)

Writing Space: Ideal vs. Reality

“Writing Space: Ideal vs. Reality” by Christi Corbett When I was young, I pictured the location where authors/writers did their work. It was always some variation of the following: The recently showered and fully dressed author/writer pads down a long hallway and opens a door to their own private writing space. Clutching a mug of tea/coffee, the writer sits down at a comfortable chair located behind a highly polished, very organized mahogany desk. There is a wall of books on one wall and a window with a completely astounding view (more…)

How to Eat an Elephant

How to Eat an Elephant or How to Start Writing That Novel By Kevin M. Kraft I recently reconnected with a dear high school friend of mine whom I hadn’t seen, or spoken to, for over 20 years. With a single telephone call all of the years seemed compressed. While I struggled with the fact of the two-decade estrangement, I enjoyed catching up and letting her know what I’d been doing. Namely, writing. After I filled her in, she expressed her desire in writing a novel, which, in turn, reminded (more…)
